EVERY driver who was fined under a controversial bridge closure now looks set to be repaid their cash.

The experimental six-month closure of Lendal Bridge in York city centre caused uproar and the scheme was suspended last February.

Some 63,000 motorists who flouted the ban were fined a total of around £1.3m through penalty charge notices.

But the local council dropped the scheme after a Government traffic adjudicator ruled it had no right to issue fines to those who breached the restriction.

Now all drivers who received a fine are set to be informed automatically so that they can arrange a repayment.

Under plans likely to be approved next week, the council proposes to write to everyone who was issued with a PCN at their last known address to advise them of the refund process.

The local cabinet will also be asked to extend the deadline of the current online process for Lendal Bridge repayments until the end of December.
