DETECTIVES said an arson attack on a car parked outside a house could have had devastating consequences.

A BMW car was destroyed and four other vehicles wrecked in a blaze that also damaged the front of a house in Tudor Lane, Acomb, York, at 12.45am on Tuesday (October 14).

In CCTV footage recovered by police, a suspect can be seen placing something underneath the BMW before setting it on fire.

Detective Sergeant Mark Jackson, of York CID, said: “The act of arson took place very close to the house where people were sleeping.

"This fire could easily have led to potentially devastating consequences."

He appealed to local petrol station workers who may have sold fuel to someone filling a petrol can to contact police.

Det Sgt Jackson added: “If you recognise the person captured on camera, or saw someone matching their description in the Tudor Road, Gale Lane or Middleton Road areas around the time of the fire, I urge you to contact the police on 101."
