AN INJURED girl was rescued yesterday after falling 50 metres down a steep bank.

The incident happened in Mulgrave Woods, near Sandsend, Whitby.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance crews called for the help of Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT) volunteers to carry the girl to a waiting helicopter.

She was then flown to James Cook Hospital, in Middlesbrough, for treatment.

A spokesman for CMRT said: "Eighteen members of the team responded to the incident, many of whom had just competed a weekend water training course.

"After an initial difficulty in locating the incident within the network of tracks in the woods, the team assisted the ambulance paramedics in carrying the injured girl, who was on a day out from Redcar with her family, 500m to the air ambulance which flew her to James Cook Hospital for treatment."

The incident lasted around one and a half hours.
