THIRSK'S secretive yarn bombers have struck again to help the town celebrate the centenary of the RAF.

A multitude of knitted RAF-themed decorations have sprung up on street furniture around the town centre and the Force's iconic red, white and blue colours adorn bollards across the market place.

Spitfires, plane propellers and a tapestry of the poignant poem "Our Wall" by Battle of Britain pilot, Flt Lt William Walker are among the creative designs on public display.

The RAF celebrated its 100th anniversary on Sunday which marked the beginning of an eight-month celebration of national events, including dedicated television programmes, concerts, a service at Westminster Abbey and a centenary flypast over Buckingham Palace.

Since its formation on April 1, 1918, the RAF has played a pivotal role in countless military operations from the Second World War through to the battle for the Falkland Islands and the Cold War.

The RAF is currently engaged in 13 missions on four continents and in 22 countries.
