ONE dis-gruntled woman lambasted an art gallery owner for exhibiting an unflattering porcine caricature of Donald Trump.

Gallery owner John Bell felt rather a swine after being told she'd trotted into the Zillah Bell Gallery in Thirsk, to brand the piggy portrayal of the 45th President of the United States as "disgusting" and an "affront".

"It was my daughter Lettie who was here, we thought we were going to get into an argument with a pro-Trump supporter," he said.

However, it turned out that she was merely hamming up her protest and fixed Lettie with a glare before squealing: "That's an insult to pigs."

Mr Bell said: “We thought it was brilliant, such a fabulous remark, I think Lettie originally feared we were going to get a wall built around Thirsk or something!

"The engraving is entitled The Republican Candidate, although it’s now known as Ronald the Rump. We were so impressed with it we put it on all the posters and publicity for the exhibition and the woman had seen it in our window."

The wood engraving was created by Hilary Paynter, who has extensive murals on the Tyne and Wear Metro, and is one of the UK’s leading engravers. It’s one of over 150 engravings and prints from artists from all over the world on show at the gallery as part of the 79th Exhibition by the Society of Wood Engravers.

“It’s a travelling exhibition with artists from Japan, China, America and many other parts of the world. They’re drawn from an open submission and there's a rigorous selection process, demonstrating a wide range of approaches and subject matter, combining wit and vision with often astonishing levels of skill," said Mr Bell.

“Hilary’s creation of The Republican Candidate has really struck a chord I think, it would be fascinating to see how it would go down in America,” he added.
