A TEAM of primary school gardeners are celebrating overcoming competition from across Yorkshire to be crowned Young Growers of the Year.

Year one pupils from Thirsk Community Primary School took the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s plaque after entering the Children’s Vegetable Box Competition for the first time this year.

Dozens of primary schools took part in the society's tenth School Vegetable Box competition, which saw pupils spending months planting their boxes, tending them, and keeping a diary detailing how the seeds had grown.

The growers of the best 12 boxes were invited to the Great Yorkshire Show along with the keepers of the diaries.

Year one teacher Amy Shepherd said everyone was overjoyed with the win.

She said: “It really is fantastic. The veg box was delivered to us earlier in the year and it is now packed with everything from potatoes, sweetcorn and courgettes to onions, gourds and radishes.

"The children have loved learning about all the different fruit and vegetables, what the leaves look like, and how they grow – it has been really educational and fun for them all."
