THE fame of Yorkshire’s favourite vet spread around the world thanks to his books, films and TV series - and it still shows no sign of abating.

Even Moscow has its James Herriot fan club – and it is now forging kinks with the attraction based in his original Thirsk surgery.

The head of the club, Mary Sheglova, visited the World of James Herriot - where author Alf Wight, the man behind the pen-name, first worked.

It is now an attraction under the name of the World of James Herriot

Ms Sheglova presented managing director Ian Ashton with a red rose plant that will be planted in the garden beside the recently installed statue of the vet-turned-writer.

It is a traditional Russian custom to give such a gift in thanks when someone has been helpful, as the act of giving flowers is highly symbolic and red is considered the most classic.

“Mary was so enthusiastic about everything Herriot and said that it was one of her life’s ambitions to visit the area and see the places that Alf Wight based his books on,” said Mr Ashton.

“She hopes to visit again next year to meet Jim and Rosie, the son and daughter Alf Wight.”
