ONE of the country’s historic archery clubs has spent the last twelve months investing in its coaching resources, to become a centre of coaching excellence for the sport.

The Thirsk Bowmen is signed up to Archery GB’s Ontarget programme, which is committed to bringing new entrants into the sport.

It also helps them fulfil their potential, in some cases through to county, or even Olympic and Paralympic standard.

Over the last year, lead coach Danny Cameron has attained Archery GB County Coach accreditation, assistant Thomas Keane, who runs the club’s beginners courses and junior coaching, has passed his Level 2 Coach exam, and Ian Chappell has gained his Level 1 Coaching qualification.

Additionally, Allan Shuker, who has been on the club’s coaching staff for five years and is its child protection officer, has attained Archery GB’s County Judge accreditation, which also involved extensive study and assessment.

Club chairman Ken Billings said; “All of these qualifications demand dedication and commitment to both Archery GB and this club.

“They represent a significant step towards our ambitions to have Thirsk Bowmen recognised not only for its historical significance, but also as a coaching centre.”

Archery GB has nearly 50,000 members across the UK.
