THE 37th North Yorkshire County Show proved a big draw for Father’s Day crowds, attracting more than 10,000 visitors.

With increased entries in sheep and cattle and many craft areas, the show was off to a good start before the gates opened, and with fine weather and dry conditions organisers said the event is building year on year and had been a huge success.

“It’s been a wonderful show,” said President John Turner. “The great thing about the County Show is that it has something for everyone, it is a country show, but there is a lot for people from the town’s as well, it’s a real family event.”

The success of this year's event also a huge turnaround for the show which was on the edge of bankruptcy when it had to be cancelled after being flooded out in 2012.

Secretary Allan Andrew said they had invested heavily and were now reaping the benefits with big attractions in the main ring including Inch Perfect Motorcycle Display Team and the Stampede Stunt Company.

One of the other big hits in the main ring was a fox hound called Caroline, from the Bedale Hunt, who while being put through her paces caught an interesting aroma from the craft tent and escaped, returning with the first prize in the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Guild white bread class.

“It was obviously irresistible so you can’t really blame the dog,” said Mr Andrew.

There was a major turnaround in the sheep section which had nearly 500 entries as newcomers Jane and Neil Noble, from Guisborough carried off the Supreme champion title with their Beltex lamb born in February.

“We were amazed,” said Mrs Noble. “We very nearly didn’t come because we are going away and it was all a real rush. We’ve been breeding for around five years and have around 55 to 60 ewes, but we’ve never been to the North Yorkshire show before and thought we would give it a try, obviously it was a good move. I think we could well be coming back next year."
