A JUNIOR football team has scooped an award for fair play at a recent sporting event.

Thirsk Falcon Juniors under eights Golds took the Fair Play Award at Wigginton Grasshoppers annual football gala on Saturday, May 30.

Established for more than 30 years, the tournament attracts teams from all over the region and is popular across all age groups.

Three Thirsk Falcons U8s teams entered the tournament this year – Clarets, Blues and Golds, who competed against teams from all over York and North Yorkshire.

The under sevens and under eights play in a non-competitive style event as directed by the FA with each player receiving a participation medal.

The under eights Golds were proud to receive the referee’s fair play award after achieving the best record of fair play throughout the whole tournament.

The Fair Play Award is in recognition of the players, coaches and parents who demonstrate fair play and positive sporting behaviour throughout the matches.

Coaches Ian Reed and Mark Smallman said: “The Golds have only played for one season but their talent, commitment and team spirit has shone through.

“As the team reorganises for next season the lads are thrilled to win the Fair Play Award at Wigginton to bring the Golds season to a close.”

The team included Thom Ingoldsby, Brett Mason, Stan Smallman, Jonathan Reed, Charlie Dennis and Mason Banthorpe.
