A TOWN bus has been saved – at least temporarily – after North Yorkshire County Council agreed to operate the service using its own vehicle.

After the decision by Hayesway Travel to withdraw the Pickering service from June 7, the council had been waiting to see if another commercial operator would be interested in taking over the service.

No-one came forward, so the council will use its own fleet vehicle on a six month, Monday to Friday, trial basis from June 11.

The executive member for public transport, Cllr Don Mackenzie, said: “I would encourage the residents of Pickering, including all those who signed the petition asking for the service to be restored, to make sure they use it."
