A MAN has died after being hit by a car on the A64, police have confirmed.

It is believed that the 26-year-old man had walked to the A64 from Scagglethorpe before he was hit on on the west-bound carriageway, near Sherburn in the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire, at around 6.15pm on Monday.

The vehicle involved was a blue Ford Focus.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Police say his family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

The stretch of road remained closed to traffic until 10.45pm last night while the police carried out a detailed collision investigation.

Local diversions were put in place during that time.

Police enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward as soon as possible, including anyone who recalls seeing either the man or the blue Ford Focus prior to the collision.
