SECTIONS of two of the busiest roads in North Yorkshire have been closed following serious crashes involving five vehicles.

North Yorkshire Police said a motorcyclist was taken to hospital following a crash on the A170 Thirsk to Scarborough road, south of the North York Moors.

A police spokesman said the incident shortly before noon had also involved a Ford Fiesta and a BMW, at Aislaby, between Kirkbymoorside and Pickering.

The extent of the motorcyclist's injuries remain unclear.

Police have warned motorists to avoid the area.

Two motorists sustained minor injuries in a crash on the A59, at Kettlesing, near Harrogate, at about 1.30pm, after a collision which saw a car come to rest on its roof in a ditch.

Police said the incident, which involved a Fiat Punto and a Volkswagen Scirocco happened near The Millstones restaurant.

One of the drivers was taken to hospital, while the other was treated at the scene.

Police have launched investigations into the causes of the accidents.

Anyone who witnessed either incident or saw any of the vehicles beforehand, should call police on 101.
