AN investigation has been launched following a house fire in which an elderly man died.
The 90-year-old was found dead inside the property in Malton, North Yorkshire, after firefighters were able to enter it.
The fire service and police were called to the scene in Fitzjohn Close at about 7.45am today, Friday.
"A 90-year-old man was found by firefighters inside the property. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene,” confirmed a police spokesman.
"Police and fire investigators will carry out a full examination of the property to determine how it started."
Kathleen Morley, who lives nearby, said they heard sirens at around 7.45am. "I thought it was the bypass then I saw the blue lights,” she said. “At first we just saw smoke, then the fire appeared. It's so sad."
