TEN years on from the brutal murder of a mother in North Yorkshire, her family are holding a fundraising walk in her memory.

Rebecca Kowal, from West Tanfield, near Ripon, was murdered by her partner in May 2008 following domestic abuse. The 29-year-old was the mother of an eight-year-old daughter.

Rebecca suffered 170 injuries at the hands of her partner, 47-year-old Robert Byrom, who was jailed for life the following January.

Now her family will be holding a walk and family fun day at West Tanfield on May 12, to raise money for the Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS), which support anyone who has been affected by domestic abuse or sexual violence.

‘Becca’s Walk’, as the event has been named, will involve a seven-mile sponsored walk from West Tanfield, starting at 11am, and family fundraising activities for all to enjoy at the village hall from 1pm.

There will also be evening entertainment from 7pm, including a DJ and buffet.

It has been partly organised by Rebecca’s brother, Andrew Overton, a police officer with Cleveland Police. Also helping organise the event is Rebecca’s daughter, Sophie, who is now 18.

Andrew said: “It's 10 years since we lost a special person in our lives, a vibrant and beautiful young lady, my sister Rebecca Kowal.

"She was so cruelly denied a bright future due to domestic violence, she was brutally murdered by her partner in May 2008. Ten years have gone by but not one day passes without thinking about her and missing her.”

It is hoped the event will raise as much money as possible for IDAS, which has offices across Yorkshire.

The day will incorporate a range of fundraising activities, including craft stalls, refreshments and activities for children.

Andrew said as well as raising funds for IDAS, he also hoped the event would raise awareness of domestic abuse and keep his sister’s memory alive.

He said Rebecca’s family were keen for her to be remembered for the good times, saying she was a larger than life character who had a notable presence, which was still missed.

Her family said they were also keen for everyone to be aware of the warning signs of domestic abuse and how to get support from organisations like IDAS.
