ONE of the biggest gatherings of steam engines and tractors in the country takes place for the 52nd time on July 15 and 16.

Thousands are expected to attend the Masham Steam Rally, which is being held at Marfield , on the A6108 road to Leyburn, from Masham. This year will feature 45 full sized steam engines, 150 tractors and 800 other exhibits.

Organisers say this is not just an event for enthusiasts but a celebration of the history of Yorkshire’s farming community and rural activities. Demonstrations will be held of logcutting haybaling and milking.

“The rally hosts beautifully maintained machines that older folk will remember from their childhoods and younger people will find of great historical interest,” said organiser Flo Grainger.

"Steam engines are totally captivating, and like human beings have a heart. When an engine is ticking over at 62 rpm it is almost the same rhythm of a heartbeat, and the warmth and smell of steam gives the aura that captures the atmosphere of the occasion," she added.

Money raised through the rally has been used to help keep Masham town hall open and thriving since 1965 with funds invested in maintaining and running the centre which is used for many community events.

  • The rally starts at 9.30 am on both days, adult entrance is £10, concessions £8, children £2 and under-fives free.
