THE BROTHER of a woman murdered by her violent partner has organised a sponsored walk to raise money for children affected by domestic abuse.

Cleveland Traffic Officer Andrew Overton organised the walk in memory of his sister, Rebecca Kowal, a mother from West Tanfield, Ripon. She was killed in May 2008 by her partner Robert Byrom after enduring domestic abuse.

Byrom was jailed for life for her murder.

Mr Overton is now an ambassador for North Yorkshire’s domestic abuse charity IDAS, and is encouraging people to be aware of the signs of domestic abuse and get support.

Becca’s Walk and fun day will take place on Saturday, May 7 at Rowntree Park, York from 11am.

He said: “I have lost someone very close to my heart. This event is in her memory to raise awareness and money for BECCA’S FUND in support of children and young people affected by domestic violence in North Yorkshire.”

The event includes a 10K sponsored walk, child-friendly stroll plus bouncy castle, face painting and entertainment.

Sarah Hill, director of IDAS said police took more than 9,000 domestic abuse calls in North Yorkshire last year. In 90 per cent of reported incidents, children were present in the house.

She said: “It is a traumatic and isolating experience. They are suffering the effects of domestic abuse and separation. They leave behind their friends, family, grandparents, toys and even their pets."
