The sheep are becoming even more adventurous as long as the shepherd isn't around to keep an eye on them. At least, that's how they are depicted in Malcolm Dormer's third exhibition.

"While The Shepherd's Still Away" is the title of Malcolm's latest collection of amusing and surreal paintings, which will be on show in Richmond during August. Several of the subjects are set in Richmond itself, including a trip to the sales ("Woollies in Woollies in Woollies"), and a group waiting for a haircut ("Baa Baa Queue").

Others include a fashion show ("On The Sheepwalk"), an album cover ("The Bleatles") and even one in space ("Mars Baas").

Malcolm Dormer was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire. He started drawing at a very early age, attended Cheltenham Art College and worked for the Ministry of Agriculture and the Meat and Livestock Commission for 30 years.

“The idea for my exhibition ‘While the Shepherd’s Away’ arrived after a trip to the Dales. The idea of surreal sheep took off! I visited a friend and fellow artist who helps run Pioneer Projects at Looking Well Studios, a nationally renowned arts and health charity based in Bentham. The Project uses the arts to promote the health and well being of local communities. I was amazed at the work being done so I offered to paint a picture to raise money for their cause. The first picture in the series - “Returning Home at the Ingleborough Fell” was born and the rest kept coming”.

The exhibition is in the Finklegate Gallery, Finkle Street, Richmond throughout August. Opening times are Monday - Saturday, 10:00am to 5:00pm, and some Sundays 11:00am - 4:00pm (check by calling 01748 822400 beforehand).
