VOLUNTEERS are needed to help wade through history and identify finds dug up at a site in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The Park has organised the event through We Dig Community with the help of the Young Archaeologists club. A series of digs on the green in Bainbridge in Wensleydale were held and workshops have already been run to identify some of the finds, but organisers still have a lot they want to sift through, so an extra identification session is being held at Bainbridge Temperance Hall on Thursday September 14.

A spokesman said they've already found a piece of pottery that is Roman in date, and also unearthed, coins, clay pipes, medieval pottery, a bone domino and a WW11 bullet.

"Unusually though, the majority of the finds that our test pits have produced are post-medieval in date. This is interesting because Bainbridge is considered to have medieval origins, and we therefore thought that we would get earlier finds . It is, of course, too early to draw any conclusions from this, but it brings up lots of questions," he added.

They're hoping the extra session will help them find further answers, anyone who would like to get involved contact Rebecca Cadbury-Simmons at Rebecca.Cadbury-Simmons@yorkshiredales.org.uk or 01969 652353.
