YOUNGSTERS from Maryland in the USA have journeyed to Richmond to take part in a five-day international youth theatre festival.

It involves around 30 English and American students, aged between 11-18 years, working together to create a show based on the popular character of Peter Pan.

The show Neverland will be staged on Friday at 7.30pm and will be accompanied by an art exhibition, incorporating photography, music and sculpture.

It is the result of an initiative between Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal and the Anne Arundel County Public School System in Maryland, now in its third successful year.

And appropriately the American students are staying at nearby Kiplin Hall which has strong historical links with Maryland, being built in the 17th-century by George Calvert, the spiritual founder of Maryland.

The American director, Leayne Dempsey, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring together students from both countries. This piece of drama is truly original and breathtakingly beautiful.”

Tickets at £5 and are available from 01748-825252 or georgiantheatreroyal.co.uk
