A BUS fire in Richmond turned out to be a false alarm – but the incident still caused a five hour road closure.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue was called around noon on Sunday to reports of a bus in fire at Sandbeck Bridge, between the Holly Hill and Sleegill area of Richmond and Catterick Garrison.

Despite an inspection finding it to just be possible engine failure, North Yorkshire Police had to close the road for five hours and redirect traffic attempting to get to the garrison.

It is thought the bus suffered engine failure at the bottom of a sharp incline leading towards Sandbeck Bridge and it struggled to make its way out of the deep dip.

Residents of Holly Hill, at the top of Sleegill, said the bus damaged some guttering on a cottage at the top of the road when it was finally able to move on.
