THE funeral of a man who spent 17 years tirelessly serving his local community as a councillor will take place tomorrow. (Tuesday, June 14)

Tony Pelton died aged 77 at Abbey Care in Scorton after a long illness.

He was one of Richmondshire District Council’s longest serving councillors, having spent 17 years representing Catterick Village as an independent.

His funeral will take place at 11am at St Joseph and St Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, in Newbiggin, Richmond, and will be followed by a burial at Richmond Cemetery.

Cllr Pelton, who died in June 1, was first elected in 1995 until 2007, and again from 2011 until his death on June 1. 

Leader of Richmondshire District Council Yvonne Peacock said: “We are saddened to hear of Tony’s death – he was a dedicated local councillor who carried out his work to support his ward with enthusiasm. He will be sorely missed.”

The council’s civic flag will fly at half mast until sunset on the day of his funeral.

Former Richmondshire District Councillor Jill McMullon added: “Tony was a wonderful man, and was very highly thought of by the whole community.

“Every village or community needs a Tony Pelton – he was hard working, knowledgeable and dedicated to everything he did.”

Cllr Clive World, another district council colleague of Cllr Pelton, said he would be sorely missed.

“He really cared about Catterick. He was councillor for a long time and also used to produce a local newsletter, the Clarion.

“He also used to run a book shop in Richmond, and was always ready to support events and be there with a cheery smile.”

Cllr Pelton, was a dearly loved cousin of Ann and will be sadly missed by many. Friends are asked to meet at the church. Family flowers only please, donations may be given at church for The Great North Air Ambulance.
