THE BEACON in Richmond is to be lit as part of a National Beacon Chain in celebration of the Queen's 90th birthday on Thursday, April 21.
Richmond Town Council is asking spectators to view the lighting of the beacon from Richmond Racecourse rather than the beacon field because it is currently too rutted and wet and is unsuitable for cars and people.
The council will be directing residents to the grandstand on the racecourse. Dogs are welcome on a lead and must be cleaned up after. Refreshments will be available and there will be music.
Parking is on Gallowfields Industrial Estate (DL10 4SU) and entry to the racecourse is via the public footpath, next to Robinson Group building, which leads to the grandstand. It is requested that only disabled visitors park at the Hurgill Road entrance.
The council hopes visitors will take the opportunity to 'fly your kite for the Queen' - and there will be a cash prize for the most appropriately themed kite flown between 6.45pm and 7.15pm. It must stay airborne long enough to be judged.
The beacon will be lit at 7.30pm, with Richmond Roundtable providing the material for the beacon and deputy mayor Cllr Stuart Parsons striking the match.
Visitors are reminded to wrap up warm, wear suitable shoes and take their litter home.
