MAJOR changes are planned to the way recyclable material is collected across Hambleton.
The 180-strong chain of mini recycling centres are being withdrawn next March – a month after a new system of kerbside recycling is introduced.
Each home is to receive a third wheelie bin so more cardboard and plastics, cartons, cans, paper and glass can be collected at the kerbside. Currently only paper, glass, cans, plastic bottles and some card are taken from homes.
Over the last week the village halls, parishes, schools and pubs where the mini sites are located have been informed about the changes.
Village halls and schools will be offered their own kerbside wheeled bins – in order to recycle like home owners. Pubs and owners of other sites have been given details of commercial operators that collect recycled material.
Local cabinet member Cllr Brian Phillips said: “The new service will provide enough capacity for people to recycle at home so these sites will no longer be needed. We can also make significant savings – the costs of servicing these sites is around £80,000 a year.
“Our annual waste survey showed that householders want more recycling at their home and through the new scheme that is exactly what they will be getting.”
*The Household Waste Recycling Centres operated by North Yorkshire County Council remain in place.
