YOUNGSTERS at a North Yorkshire primary school have made their teachers and parents proud after excelling at a school Race for Life event.

Brompton Community Primary School, near Northallerton, was one of the first schools in North Yorkshire to hold a Race for Life Schools and headteacher Jane Byrne said she was blown away by the pupils who all completed either a 5km or 3km race.

Richmond MP Rishi Sunak attended the cancer charity fundraiser to give his encouragement and also donned a pair of trainers to run alongside the younger children.

Ms Byrne said: “This year Race for Life was opened up to schools for the first time.

“It was an outstanding day and exceeded everything we could have wished for. Cancer has touched a lot of children at the school, as well as myself, so it was really touching to see how many people got behind the event.

“We had a lot of past parents joining in and we have already raised more than £1,000 – completely smashing our £500 target.”

Mr Sunak said: “I was delighted to start the race and run a few laps with students. They were so full of energy and also aware of how they were helping those battling cancer. They were also delighted to keep out pacing me.”
