MORE than 30 firefighters are tackling a large moorland blaze in the Yorkshire Dales.
Around a square kilometre of heather on Ellerton Moor, near Reeth, is on fire.
The blaze was reported on Thursday afternoon.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said one engine from Reeth was initially sent to investigate and fire fighters quickly requested three further engines.
Crews from Richmond, Leyburn and Colburn were sent along with an argocat - an all terrain vehicle - and a water bowser.
The crews worked until 8pm, with six crews returning on Friday morning.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue group manager Carl Boasman said at the scene on Friday: "The incident is challenging due to the weather conditions and the lack of a water supply but crews will remain as long as necessary."
Mr Boasman said the cause of the blaze had not yet been determined.
