PEACE activists are planning a protest at radar base Fylingdales on the North York Moors.

The activists, from the Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarament, will doing a ‘peace walk’ and flying ‘peace kites’ at the base, which forms part of America’s missile defence system.

The demonstration on Saturday (October 11) is part of Keep Space for Peace Week, which will see similar protests in more than ten different countries.

CND says that the existence of Fylingdales makes it more, not less likely, that the UK will be the focus of an attack by hostile opponents of the US.

Fylingdales is one of two bases in North Yorkshire – the other being Menwith Hill, near Harrogate – which form part of the US Missile Defence System.

National CND chairman Professor Dave Webb said: “The US claims the system protects Europe as well as the US. This is not the case.

“Any missiles that are detected are likely to be shot down over Europe. If these were nuclear, the fall out would occur over Europe, not the US. The bases are also prime targets for anyone wanting to attack the US and its missile defence system.”
