A THEME park and zoo has been named Yorkshire’s Most Magnificent Attraction for 2014.

Voted for by the public over the summer months, Flamingo Land Resort near Malton beat off stiff competition including last year’s winner, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and 15 other top attractions to make the Magnificent Attractions list.

Flamingo Land Resort occupies 375 acres of North Yorkshire countryside, and has also recently seen the development of the Mansion House and Tea Rooms, and outdoor entertainment and dining arena, Riverside One.

This year has seen new arrivals of Sumatran tiger triplets and more recently a zebra foal.

More than 13,000 people voted for their favourite Yorkshire attraction, nearly tripling the amount of votes received in 2013, with Yorkshire Wildlife Park coming in second place followed, in order, by Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Deborah Hindley, director of Yorkshire’s Magnificent Attractions, said: “The phenomenal response and amount of votes we received is fantastic and is a testament to the value of these attractions in Yorkshire.

Sarah Mills, director of marketing at Flamingo Land Resort, said: "We are absolutely delighted to be voted Yorkshire's Most Magnificent Attraction 2014 - especially as this award is decided by Yorkshire's visitors themselves.

“We have had a record year so far, indicating visitors are appreciative of the continued investment into the park, including lemur and wallaby walkways, a new Mansion House and Tea Rooms which also caters for events and weddings, and Riverside One which has now hosted chart topping live acts such as Tinchy Stryder.

“We are planning a number of exciting developments for next year which I'm sure will be well received by our customers."
