MOST people nowadays visit Farndale in the North York Moors for its wonderful show of wild daffodils every Spring.
Yet that idyllic rural valley famous was very nearly flooded for a reservoir to supply the fresh water needs of the city of Kingston-upon-Hull. To hear the full story, you need to attend the next Lunchtime Lecture at the North Yorkshire County Record Office in Malpas Road, Northallerton.
Dr Bernie Eccleston, formerly of the University of Hull and the Open University, has dedicated his retirement to researching the provision of mains water supplies to the residents and industries of Yorkshire.
Poring over the archives at the Record Office, he has uncovered the hidden story of Hull City Corporation’s repeated efforts to build a reservoir behind a 50-metre high dam in Farndale. Now he will make his findings public in a talk in the foyer of the Record Office, starting at 12.30pm on Friday. An admission fee of £2, which includes light refreshments, is payable on the day.
