A 26-YEAR-OLD intensive pig farmer is celebrating after winning a national accolade in the farming world.

Matthew Donald, from West Rounton, near Northallerton, was named Young Pig Farmer of the Year at The National Pig Awards 2017.

He has been integral in his family’s pig and poultry business for seven years and became a director four years ago.

The accolade was awarded for involvement in the business and the demonstration of new initiatives and commitment to the industry.

His research into building performance has steered investment in new farrowing, weaning, finishing and gilt accommodation in the 280-sow pig unit.

Mr Donald said: “The judges said I had a good overall view of the pig industry and our family farm was praised.

“I nominated myself but was encouraged to do so by some businesses we work alongside.

“I didn’t go expecting to win as reaching the final was a great achievement but now I have it feels great to get some recognition. “It also means all our investment, research and hard work has paid off.”

The Donald’s poultry business is expanding with a new site just a few miles away from the family farm.

The ceremony was held at the Lancaster Hotel in London and he was awarded £500 prize money.
