PEOPLE have reported a large amount of police activity in Northallerton on Saturday.

A large number of police vehicles were present on Grange Close and Boroughbridge Road in Northallerton, near the derelict former tyre garage, for most of the day on Saturday.

The police activity follows thieves stealing a large amount of scrap copper being stored at a building in Friarage Avenue, in the town, between 8am and 2.30pm on Thursday.

It remains unclear if the police activity is connected with the theft.

Eyewitnesses reported seening numerous police cars on the A167, Boroughbridge Road, the main road in the south of the market town.

North Yorkshire Police have not yet released any details regarding the incident, but there are unconfirmed reports that armed officers were at one point present at the scene.
