A WILDERNESS of brambles, nettles and small trees has been transformed into a secret garden at the heart of a busy town centre.

Behind Northallerton’s High Street, a large plot of greenery has been tendered to by volunteers associated with the Zion United Reformed Church, who are extending the oasis of peace and greenery.

The garden, which sits on land next to the church and behind Kitson’s Butchers, has been extended to an adjacent plot behind Costa after an agreement was reached with the landlord.

The secret area has been cleared and turned into a garden filled with vegetables, fruit and flowers.

Liz Styan, a leading volunteer at the site, said: “We wanted to create a calming oasis of quietness and greenery just yards from the hustle and bustle of the High Street for anyone to enjoy and which would also be a haven for wildlife.

“We also wanted to use it to produce food for the Hambleton Foodshare foodbank next door.”

After 18 months of work and 2,500 man hours, the garden boasts numerous raised beds, paths and seating dotted around the plot.

There is also a large woodpile for wildlife and a polytunnel for growing fruit and vegetables.

Richmond MP Rishi Sunak visited the garden to talk to the volunteers and see the fruits of their labours.

He said: “This is a truly wonderful spot in the heart of our county town and yet I am sure many people will not know it is here.

“The volunteers have done a tremendous job and deserve our thanks.

“It is very good to hear of the support they have had from the church, businesses and other organisations in the area.”

The secret garden is open to the public from 2pm every Monday and Thursday afternoon.
