BUILDING work is due to start this summer on a multi-million pound cancer care centre for patients from the North Yorkshire and South Tees area.

Hambleton council has approved plans for the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre which will be built on the site of the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.

Philanthropist Sir Robert Ogden is jointly funding the project with the Macmillan Cancer charity, the third similar project they have undertaken. Sir Robert and Lady Ogden who are helping with the design say their aim is to create a relaxing and comfortable centre.

Sir Robert Ogden said: “I am extremely pleased to be involved in one more project with Macmillan Cancer Support. Another Centre in Yorkshire will come to reality where many people suffering with cancer from a vast area will receive the treatment and support they need and deserve, bringing them some feeling of wellbeing and comfort during the most difficult time of their lives.”

The project will include a chemotherapy treatment lounge for up to 35 patients a day, with therapy facilities, treatment and consulting rooms, a Macmillan information and support centre with backup accommodation, including telemedicine facilities.

Dr Angela Wood, strategic lead for cancer services at South Tees NHS Foundation Trust, added: “This is the start of an exceptionally exciting time for the development of cancer services at the Friarage and will help us to provide the highest quality of care possible for our patients in a dedicated environment.”

The centre is due to be opened in summer 2018.
