THE tuneful sound of handbells has managed to raise hundreds of pounds for a local charity.

Northallerton Handbell Ringers are a group of musicians who perform concerts in the region to raise money for local causes and charities.

The bells they use are each tuned to a particular note in a scale and are rung in quick succession by the musicians. It is believed the tradition dates back to the late 1600s, when church tower bell ringers used them to rehearse outside their towers without disturbing people living nearby the church.

The Northallerton group recently performed a concert which raised £460 for the local charity Breathing Space.

The organisation is based in Northallerton. It was set up in 1994 to enable adults with learning disabilities living in Hambleton and Richmondshire with the opportunity to enjoy leisure activities away from their homes. Where possible, it also helps individuals and groups to join in with community and recreational activities.

The money was presented by Northallerton Handbell Ringers, Glynis Leach and Margaret Cunnington to Breathing Space’s Anne Alder.
