TOWN councillors have applauded a new Sunday market which they say has been a success.

The new monthly market in Bedale is holding its next event on Saturday and Sunday, November 21 and 22, to coincide with the town’s Christmas Festival on the Saturday.

Run by Yorkshire Food markets organisers say twenty stallholders attended the first one held last month and there was good footfall throughout the day.

Bedale Town Council gave the market permission to use the town centre for the event. Mayor Cllr Christine Mollard said:”It did seem to go well with several stalls running out. Let’s hope it get’s bigger and better.”

Cllr Mandi Coates added:”There seemed to be a lot of people there, I think the organisers were surprised at the numbers of people.”

Town Clerk Richard Howard said there had been concern that parking wardens from Scarborough Borough council attended but this was the kind of event they did turn up for and the market may not need as much parking in the future.

Andrew Riley, co-organiser of Bedale Monthly Market, said: “Thanks to the customers and market traders, our first market was a busy one for us.

“Our two-day event in November is an ideal time to consider some festive shopping in a lovely market town, ahead of the Christmas rush.”
