THE first Parkrun to be held in the Hambleton district proved to be a runaway success.

More than 180 people turned up for the five kilometre event on the fields at Stone Cross, Northallerton.

They included experienced runners, those just starting out, families and even a couple of dogs.

The local authority’s portfolio holder for leisure services, Councillor Bridget Fortune, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people out early on a Saturday morning enjoying themselves.

“The atmosphere was brilliant and thanks must go to the district council’s communities team who managed to secure £3,000 from North Yorkshire Sport to bring this sporting sensation to Hambleton.

“We hope that the event will build gradually to attract 200+ runners every Saturday morning.”

The Northallerton Parkrun will take place each Saturday morning at 9am at Stone Cross.
