THE driver of a 40-tonne tanker has been charged with drink-driving on one of the region's busiest roads.

A 56-year-old man was intercepted by North Yorkshire Police while travelling north on the A19, at Crathorne, near Yarm.

A police spokeswoman said it had received alerts about the truck from a neighbouring force and from a member of the public on Sunday afternoon.

She said: "He was breathalysed at the roadside and arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

"He has since been charged with drink-driving and is due to appear at Northallerton Magistrates Court on June 29."

The force's Deputy Chief Constable Tim Madgwick has praised the officers who stopped the vehicle.
