THE driver who died when his car overturned on a slip road off the A19 and smashed into a road sign has been named as Allan Cowie.

The 55-year-old crashed his Audi car yards from the Cleveland Tontine restaurant, near Osmotherley, North Yorkshire, at 7.30pm, last Tuesday (January 28).

Firefighters used hydraulic rescue equipment to free Mr Cowie, of Eaglescliffe, in Cleveland, from his car, but doctors attending the scene said he had died.

Police said there were no passengers in the car and no other vehicles involved in the incident.

An inquest into Mr Cowie’s death has been opened and adjourned.

Police will use matrix boards to display an appeal to drivers travelling the same route.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the Audi near the scene is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101.
