MILITARY chefs showed off their culinary skills when they battled it out in a Christmas bake-off.

The Catterick Garrison Christmas cake competition saw 30 cakes and 14 yule logs in the race for the title.

The event, held in the Richmond Centre in Munster Barracks, was open to civilians as well as military chefs.

Colonel Andy Hadfield, Deputy Commander 4th Infantry Brigade, said he was “completely blown” by the standard of the baking.

“Judging the Christmas cake and Yule log competition is one of the seasonal pleasures. Every year the standard gets higher and 2017 is no exception.

“The yule logs this year are particularly impressive and I would be very privileged if I could take one home.

“The inspiration and the modelling that has gone into the cakes is a sight to behold. All the chefs should be very proud of themselves.”

The prize for the winning Yule log went to Sergeant Adam Tubb, 1 Close Support Battalion REME, while the top prize for the best Christmas cake was awarded to Sergeant Phil Wilson, 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.

Sgt Wilson said he had entered many competitions before and, although he had won on occasions, the victory was special.

He said: “The competition was stiff so to come out on top was brilliant and I am really proud of myself.”
