AN ANCIENT martial art tradition which combines kicks, throws and weaponry – skills favoured by the mutant ninja turtles – has come to Colburn.

The Bujinkan Catterick, based at Colburn Leisure Centre, has nine classical schools, or ryu, and each one has distinct characteristics ranging from pressure point attacks to restraints.

Mr Kaye, 36, from Brompton on Swale, said: “I have more than 20 years of martial arts experience, having started out in Wado Ryu karate in my teens.

“I was unhappy with the limitations of the style so I searched for a more comprehensive discipline – and discovered Ninjutsu was the perfect fit.”

The syllabus comprises of strikes, kicks, locks, throws and escaping techniques. Weapons such as swords, spears and sticks are also studied, although wooden and rubber replicas are used for safety.

Classes are informal with an emphasis on natural flowing movements and correct body structure to defeat an attacker.

The Bujinkan Catterick Ninjutsu classes are every Monday at Colburn Leisure Centre at 7.30pm.

Training is open to adults over 18. Beginners are welcome and should wear loose fitting clothing. Anyone interested in the art can contact Mr Kaye on 07887-556494 or visit www.facebook.com/bujinkancatterick.
