AN ARTS project has brought together schools and residents in Catterick Garrison to look at identity.

The This Is Me project at Catterick Garrison Library involved children from Hipswell Primary School, residents of temporary accommodation for single ex-service personnel The Beacon, and members of the wider community.

Writer Irene Lofthouse and artist Sue Dewhurst have led the project to explore identity through visual imagery and creative writing.

Those taking part researched, gathered information and shared personal stories through writing, icons or decorated matchboxes.

The workshops formed part of North Yorkshire County Council’s Creative Residencies programme, which brings artists into libraries engage with children, families and older people to develop projects that will be fun and inspiring.

The results of the This Is Me project have now been displayed at Catterick Garrison library.

North Yorkshire County Councillor Chris Metcalfe said: “The Creative Residences programme can only strengthen the library’s role as a hub within the community as it brings together people of different generations and backgrounds. The results of the This Is Me project were innovative and often moving.”

Four more artists will work at the library over the coming months, with the next sessions scheduled for July.
