A FASHION show to raise cash for a Help for Heroes recovery centre is being repeated after being hailed a resounding success last year.

Help for Heroes-run recovery centre Phoenix House in Catterick Garrison will host its second catwalk event on Tuesday, October 7, at 7pm.

Last year's show featured wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans, as well as Band of Brothers and Band of Sisters members, as models.

Band of Brothers (BoB) is open to both male and female members, and provides lifelong support to those, both serving and non-serving, who have sustained career limiting or ending injuries or illnesses during service since 2001.

Band of Sisters (BoS) provides lifelong support to their loved ones. Both groups give emotional support, respite, work experience and fun family trips.

Last year, the show featured Dean Middleton, a former soldier whose skull was shattered when his vehicle hit a bomb in Afghanistan in 2010.

He was rushed back to the UK for surgery to remove parts of his skull that were causing his brain to swell.

Despite being in a coma for months he woke up without severe damage, and after finally having titanium plates fitted on his skull and a lot of support from Phoenix House, he was able to walk proudly down the catwalk.

Also enjoying the limelight last year was Mikey Hall – a veteran who was left paralysed from the waist down after falling during an army assault course – and who this year has achieved gold and bronze medals in archery in the Invictus Games.

Northern Echo editor Peter Barron will be returning to compere the evening to show his support for the brave models getting on stage despite battling with physical, mental or emotional injuries.

The Phoenix House fashion show was what prompted the idea of the Echo’s £100,000 campaign for Phoenix House, to help their bid to create a performing arts facility on site to give centre-users an outlet to show their creative side and gain confidence.

Centre manager Mo Usman said: "The positive impact on those taking part in our inaugural fashion show was evident to every member of the audience.

“Not only did they thoroughly enjoy being in the limelight but the boost in personal confidence that it gave individuals has never left them.

"It was very apparent to all centre staff that this was an aspect of support that should be introduced on a more regular basis, and the creation of a dedicated performing area in our new building will enable us to deliver this.

"We couldn't have a more appropriate partner than The Northern Echo to help us achieve this.”

Tickets cost £10 and are available from 01748-834148, Saks in Darlington, Barclays in Leyburn, and Sam's Gents Hairdresser in Richmond.
