A COUNTRY estate in North Yorkshire has won a Yorkshire in Bloom Gold Award.
Thorp Perrow Arboretum, near Bedale, won the award in the Country Houses, Estates and Parks and Gardens’ category.
The arboretum was commended by judges for its educational programs, and was praised for the children’s trail Wonderful Woodland Wildlife, which it runs in summer. They also praised the year-round interest provided, stating: “Highlights are spring and autumn but a visit at any time will be rewarding and informative.”
The judges also thanked the generations of the Ropner family, who established and continue to maintain the collection today.
Faith Douglas, curator at Thorp Perrow said: “We are all very proud of the arboretum, and everyone’s hard work in achieving this award. The arboretum is an important educational tool for children and adults alike, throughout Yorkshire and beyond.”
Lady Ropner added: “We wish to publicly thank Faith, the grounds staff and the legion of unpaid volunteers who are as passionate about the arboretum as we are.”
Covering 100 acres, Thorp Perrow Arboretum boasts one of the largest collections of shrubs and trees in the North of England, including five national collections and 59 champion trees.
