A VILLAGE primary school is celebrating after winning a “good” rating from Ofsted inspectors who had previously told them they “required improvement”.

Thornton Watlass C.E. Primary School, near Bedale, was praised for the “high expectations of all leaders” and the “purposeful atmosphere for learning” after staff, parents and governors rallied round following the previous inspection.

The school is federated with nearby Snape primary school which provides early learning education and was also praised by inspectors. Gareth Jones, chair of governors, said: “This Ofsted report represents a solid turn around for the school following on from the previous inspection. I am delighted that everyone’s hard work has paid off and the inspectors have recognised that it is a fantastic place for children to begin their education.”

Executive head Kathleen Allison added: “This positive report reflects the hard work and commitment of all the staff, parents, governors and children. We are extremely proud of our children who impressed the inspectors with their positive attitudes to learning and their responsible behaviour, being described as polite, respectful and considerate to all.

“We are delighted to share this success. We now look forward to continuing the journey towards becoming an outstanding federation.”
