SEVEN vans have been broken into over two days in an area of the Yorkshire Dales. The spate of thefts in the Leyburn and Bedale area have prompted police to urge residents to be extra vigilant. Towards the end of last week seven vans were broken into in the Leyburn area, four of which are owned by the same company. Some of the vehicles were empty, but in some cases valuable power tools were stolen. Quad bikes have also been taken from rural properties in the Bedale area. One was stolen from a property in Great Fencote over the bank holiday weekend and another from a property in Scruton on Tuesday, August 28. Sergeant Stuart Grainger of Leyburn police, reminded people to remove valuables from their vehicles. He said: “We appreciate it can be an inconvenience having to remove your tools each time, but it could save you a lot of time and expense, especially if you rely on them to earn a living.” Sgt Grainger said people should ring the police if they see any unusual activity, such as unknown vehicles acting suspiciously, or quad bikes being used after dark. He added: “Be alert to noises also - loud bangs or engines starting up when you don’t expect them can be a sign of thieves in action. Note the registration of any suspicious-looking vehicle if you can – but don’t put yourself at risk. “Please don’t think you are wasting our time, your information is vital and can help us stop a thief in their tracks. Always act on your instinct, you know your local area and if something doesn’t look right, please call us. ” To report suspicious people, vehicles or behaviour, ring North Yorkshire Police on 101. If you believe a crime is in progress, or your safety is threatened, ring 999.
