EURO MP Diana Wallis is to resign from the European Parliament following an unsuccessful bid for the presidency.

The Yorkshire MEP was one of three candidates for president of the European Parliament, but missed out on the post to German Social Democrat Martin Schulz. He won 387 out of 670 valid votes cast.

The Liberal Democrat MEP has served as vice president of the parliament for the last five years and served as an MEP for12 years.

In a statement she said: β€œAt the mid-term of parliament many members come and go. So accordingly this moment - following upon my unsuccessful bid for the presidency - is a good time to take stock.

β€œI undertook that bid for reasons that I deeply believe in, but such a course of action is bound to lead to reflection. I want to take a break from politics and to take time and assess what next.”
