A BID for York to be officially recognised as a World Heritage Site will take another step forward this summer.
The city is to submit a bid for inclusion on the UK Tentative List – the first stage of the process - in June.
The application will be assessed by a panel of experts before the final tentative list is announced in 2011.
UK nominations for World Heritage Site status will then be put to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2012.
York is trying to join an elite group that already includes Fountains Abbey, near Ripon, and Durham Castle and Cathedral.
And the city’s bid is based on its unique archaeological conditions, which means that historical artefacts in the ground are kept well preserved.
The City of York Council is working partnership with the York World Heritage Steering Group which is currently looking at the possible boundary of the proposed site.
It will include the central Historic Core Conservation Area, but could be extended to include important archaeological areas at Hungate, St George’s Fields and Holgate Dock.
