THE famous York Mystery Plays could return to their traditional home in two years’ time.
For decades they were performed amid the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey every four years, attracting audiences from around the world.
But there has not been a major production in the Museum Gardens since 1988, although they have been staged in the city’s Theatre Royal.
However it has now emerged that the York Museums Trust, which is responsible for maintaining the gardens, has been in talks with the theatre about the possibility of a return.
In a joint statement they said: "In principle, York Theatre Royal are very interested in being part of a partnership in 2012 to stage the York Mystery Plays in the Museum Gardens.
"York Museums Trust are very supportive of this ambition."
