A SCHEME to support a new generation of skilled workers on the North York Moors has won an award for its efforts.

The North York Moors National Park Authority’s modern apprenticeship scheme has won praise for its commitment to training in the workplace.

It was the UK national winner for Yorkshire and the Humber in the training provider category at the National Training Awards.

It will now go forwards to the national finals in London in December where the overall winner of the year will be named.

Richard Gunton, the authority’s director of recreation and park management, said: "The organisation is a firm believer in equipping young people with the skills and experience that will prove invaluable in their chosen careers.

"Since setting up the apprenticeship scheme nearly 30 young people have completed NVQs in countryside management and have found full time employment in the local area."

Current apprentice Tom Smailes said: "I have really enjoyed my time as an apprentice with the National Park. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about a career in countryside management."
