A NUMBER of North Yorkshire schoolchildren have been circulating sexually explicit images on mobile phones, it has been revealed.

Members of the county council’s Ryedale Area Committee were told by Inspector Simon Jolly that there had been 45 sexual offences committed in the past year in the district, but many were children circulating through their peer groups known as “sexting.”

He said when police were alerted and dealt with the incidents they were recorded as a crime.

“Education work is on-going in schools to combat the problem and schools are being giving guidance around when they should and shouldn’t become involved.”

Overall the district’s crime figures showed a decrease of 53 on the previous year, and violence incidents dropped 52.
